Testimonials from Nurses that have received funding from the Art by Nurses Art fund

Nicole Barnaby second year nursing student received a Bursary from Art by Nurses in September 2009.

Nicole's testimonial...As a busy student it is hard to find the time to paint and enjoy my most important outlet. Recently someone close to me pointed out I looked quite stressed. They also reminded me I had not painted for some time. I was quite focused on my studies and living paper to paper. As a student and single mom of two, buying art supplies is not high on my list of must haves. The bursary I received from Art by Nurses allowed me to buy some canvases and much needed paint.
As soon as I finished my first piece those around me noted the difference in my demeanor. I had become so consumed with my education; I forgot how much I needed to paint. Now, I am sure to sit and paint at least once a week and always feel enlightened by my creations.

Mattae Brunner third year nursing student received a Bursary from Art by Nurses in September 2009.

Mattae's testimonial...I was a very grateful recipient of the Art by Nurses bursary this year. I was so thankful to have received it, as I was able to participate in the Art by Nurses calendar for 2010. If it weren’t for the funds I was given thanks to the bursary committee, I would have certainly had to forfeit the opportunity. Thanks to this calendar, I was able to feel the pride of having my art hanging in homes along side some other fantastic artists! I was also able to use the remainder of the money to purchase some much needed art supplies to help me continue on my creative endeavors! Thank you so much Lynda for all the opportunities that Art by Nurses has provided for me!

Testimonials from Art by Nurses Art shows...

Art by Nurses Art show - May 7-11 2007 Victoria, BC, Canada

What wonderful work by my fellow nurses! It is wonderful to see such creativity in our profession.
C. Schfield RN

I enjoyed the show, particularly liked matte green pottery bowl and sunset over Sooke Hills.
E. Schragen

It takes a huge amount of energy, a very creative mind, and a beautiful vision of what the future can hold in order to assemble the work of a group such as this. Thank you for honoring nurses and their creative other, "inner" work.
Carrol Ann Smedley RN

Thank you, very nice to see all the talent and joy.
K Sandtbeza RN

Nurses are instruments of healing. Your art inspires us to think beyond the box.
Kate Thwaites

To Sarah my daughter - I thought of you tonight at Lynda's show. So proud to have my nurse/daughter/artist in my life.
Claire

I enjoyed the evening. I do dabble in art when I'm not at work. I recently returned from my 10th year as camp nurse for Huntington's clients and enjoyed sharing art with them. As for myself its such a release to explore art. Great show.
Geri Stewart

Brilliant exhibit. More please!
Sonya Ravel

I'm so glad I came, this really inspires me to do something artistic. There is so much beautiful art here. Thanks

Barbara J. Gill is a nurse from New Brunswick

Barbara has experienced wellness and disease on both sides of the bed. Described by some as an intuitive painter she has painted as a catharsis and to help others. She creates images she “sees” around a disease or an emotion. She understands that disease and emotions (like her paintings) can be interpreted in many ways. Her images have helped guide her and others to recovery. In some cases her images have accompanied terminally ill people as they face their passage from life.

Marti Hand is a nurse from Atlanta Georgia

I am a painter and registered nurse.  My work integrates art with science, nature, states of health, people, and the health care industry.

Although I am curious about many things, I am fascinated and inspired by science, nature, medicine, books, music, skyscrapers and people.  With that said, the creative process for my work usually begins with one of the following situations: a visual image persisting over time, an idea compelling me to act by researching the concept, a dream, a significant event or defining ‘ah-ha’ moment.  All of these states urge me to give them physical shape and color.

Painting, for me, is a love affair with color, alchemy, texture and fluidity, its boldness and subtleties, its ability to place one in a contemplative, sad or excited mood, and its infinite uses.

With a background in critical care nursing and health care management, scientific knowledge combined with extensive clinical experiences serve as a rich pool of imagery, creativity, and thought for my work.  My academic studies include an RN from Muhlenberg School of Nursing, and MPA with specialization in healthcare administration from Rutgers University.  I am a Board Member of the Women’s Caucus for Art of Georgia (WCAGA),.

I am a passionate advocate for integrating creativity and the arts into health care.  As a nurse-artist, it is my belief that medical treatment is fully effective only when the whole person is being treated - body, mind, spirit, emotions.  Visit my blog Creativity in Health care for more exciting and fascinating information on this topic.
